# Slot Value

## Short Definition

The predetermined contract dollar amount assigned to each draft pick by the CBA's rookie wage scale, based on that pick's position in the draft order.

## Definition

Slot value is the specific compensation figure the CBA assigns to each selection in the NFL Draft. Every pick from first overall to the final compensatory selection has a corresponding slot value, and teams are allocated a total draft pool—the sum of all their picks' slot values—from which total signing bonuses must come.

Teams have limited flexibility to move money between picks—up to 25% of a pick's slot value can be reallocated to other picks within the same draft pool—but cannot exceed the total pool. This system replaced the pre-2011 structure where top picks negotiated individual contracts, producing enormous guaranteed payouts for players before they had taken a professional snap.

Slot value directly ties draft position to trade value. Trading up costs additional picks because you are also acquiring higher slot value. Trading down returns picks and slot value. Compensatory picks include slot value in the overall compensation formula, which is why some compensatory picks in the third round carry more contract value than early fourth-round picks.

## Example

"They traded up five spots in the second round—that costs them both the pick and the slot value difference. Every move on the board has a dollar figure attached to it."

## Common Confusion

Slot value and total contract value are different. A pick's slot value refers to its signing bonus allocation within the team's draft pool. The full four-year contract is larger—slot value governs the signing bonus portion, not the entire salary structure.
