## Definition

A sleeper is a prospect analysts and scouts identify as likely to be drafted later than his talent warrants—a player whose ability exceeds his expected draft position because of limited national exposure, a weak conference schedule, a non-traditional position, or an unusual physical profile that doesn't fit standard evaluation frameworks.

Sleepers are most commonly discussed in the context of Day 2 and Day 3—players with starter-caliber tape who project to the third through seventh rounds because the draft media has not amplified their profile. In some cases, sleepers come from smaller programs where scouting attention is thin. In others, they come from major programs where they played behind future first-round picks and never had the opportunity to accumulate the statistical profile that drives draft boards.

Identifying sleepers is the goal of the deep analyst and the late-round roster builder. A team that consistently drafts sleepers in the third through fifth rounds accumulates value at below-market cost—the same goal as a steal, pursued intentionally before the draft rather than recognized after it.

## Example

"Nobody's talking about him but the tape is there. Small school, didn't play in a power conference—that's why he falls. But the traits don't lie. He's a sleeper in every sense of the word."

## Common Confusion

Sleeper and Steal are different. A steal is evaluated in hindsight—a player who was drafted and outperformed his pick. A sleeper is a pre-draft label—a player expected to be undervalued before anyone knows the outcome. Every sleeper pick is a potential steal, but not every steal was identified as a sleeper beforehand.
