When the SKY call is made, the safety walks up near the line of scrimmage and takes primary force responsibility. The linebacker on that side plays inside—he's no longer the force player. The safety handles the perimeter. SKY is used when the defense wants the safety's athleticism on the edge and the linebacker in a different run-fit role, typically filling inside gaps or blitzing. The coverage structure determines when SKY is available—in Cover 3 rotations, the boundary safety often has force responsibility, which triggers the SKY designation. The SKY safety has to hold the edge against tight end blocks and set the corner for inside pursuit. He can't be sealed inside or the outside run turns the corner against a safety who was supposed to be the last line of perimeter defense. ## Example "SKY call to the tight end side—safety walks up to the edge before the snap. Power run to that side: the tight end kicks out, but the safety fights outside leverage and turns the back inside. The linebacker fills the cutback. SKY set the edge; linebacker made the play." ## Common Confusion SKY is confused with a safety blitz. A safety with a SKY call sets the edge in the run fit—he's the force player, not a rusher. He's filling a run-fit assignment as a perimeter defender, not attacking the quarterback.
