Sink is a zone coverage technique where the defender gains depth away from the line of scrimmage while reading the quarterback rather than committing to a specific zone landmark. He's sinking into the coverage—dropping back while processing what the quarterback's eyes and the route combinations are telling him—before settling into a position based on where the throw is going.

The technique is used by corners and safeties who need to disguise their depth pre-snap or who want to maintain the ability to drive on shorter routes while also protecting against deeper ones. A corner who sinks at the snap looks like he could be playing flat coverage or deep third—the quarterback doesn't get a clean pre-snap read.

Sink is a movement technique, not a coverage type. It can be paired with zone assignments, pattern-match rules, or bail coverage. The common thread is gaining depth while reading rather than sprinting to a preset landmark.

## Example

"Corner sinks off the snap—dropping back while reading the quarterback. The QB thinks he's playing deep. The corner sees the out route developing at eight yards and drives forward to contest it. Gained depth to disguise, then came forward to make the play."

## Common Confusion

Sink is used interchangeably with any deep drop. The distinction is the read component—a defender who sinks is actively reading the quarterback while gaining depth, adjusting his positioning based on what he sees rather than dropping to a fixed landmark. It's not just a deep zone drop; it's a depth-gaining technique paired with a quarterback read.
