## Definition

The single-high shell shows one safety in the deep middle of the field before the snap—no second safety split to the opposite side. The middle of the field is occupied. This pre-snap alignment tells the quarterback he's seeing MOFC (Middle of Field Closed) coverage, most likely Cover 1 (man with free safety) or Cover 3 (zone with three deep defenders).

For the offense, single-high is a structural signal with specific vulnerabilities attached. Cover 3 leaves four-vertical stress at the corners and runs exposure on the backside of the three-deep structure. Cover 1 is vulnerable to crossing routes and picks that put man defenders in traffic. Identifying which single-high coverage—before or after the snap—determines the attack.

Single-high shells enable run support. The middle safety can rotate down to add a defender near the line of scrimmage, creating a plus-one advantage in the run fit without abandoning deep coverage. This is why single-high structures often appear more run-defense capable than two-high alignments.

Disguise from single-high to two-high is a common post-snap adjustment. A safety aligned in the middle can bail to split coverage at the snap, converting the appearance of Cover 1 or Cover 3 into Cover 2 or Cover 4. Quarterbacks who commit to their single-high reads without post-snap confirmation get burned by these conversions.

## Example

"One safety in the middle pre-snap—single-high shell. Quarterback reads MOFC, knows it's Cover 1 or Cover 3. He checks the corner alignments: pressed corners suggest Cover 1, off corners suggest Cover 3. That secondary read narrows it from two options to one before the snap."

## Common Confusion

Single-high shell and Cover 3 aren't synonymous. The shell is the pre-snap alignment; Cover 3 and Cover 1 are both single-high coverages. The shell tells the quarterback one safety is playing deep center; the coverage tells everyone what they're doing behind it—and disguise rotations make the read unreliable without post-snap confirmation.
