# Signing Bonus

## Short Definition

A guaranteed lump sum paid to a player at signing, prorated across contract years for cap purposes—the primary form of financial security in NFL contracts.

## Definition

A signing bonus is a guaranteed lump sum payment made to a player upon signing a contract, separate from annual base salary. It is the primary form of guaranteed money in NFL contracts and the mechanism players use to secure financial protection—unlike base salaries, which can be non-guaranteed and lost if a player is cut before earning them.

For salary cap purposes, the signing bonus is prorated evenly across the contract years up to a maximum of five years. This mechanism is the foundation of NFL cap management—a $50 million signing bonus on a five-year deal counts $10 million per year against the cap rather than $50 million in year one.

If the player is released before the contract expires, all remaining prorated amounts accelerate and count against the current year's cap as dead money—the primary risk of heavy signing bonus commitments.

## Example

"The $25 million signing bonus is fully guaranteed the moment he signs—everything else in the deal depends on whether he's on the roster when those base salary years come due."

## Common Confusion

The signing bonus is not the total contract value. A $30M signing bonus on a five-year deal means $30M is guaranteed upfront—not $30M per year. The bonus is also prorated across the contract for cap purposes, not charged entirely in year one.
