# Shovel Pass

## Short Definition

A short forward pass delivered underhand, typically to a nearby receiver just beyond the line of scrimmage.

## Definition

The shovel pass is a short, low forward toss—delivered underhand rather than overhand—thrown from behind the line of scrimmage to a receiver crossing just past it. It is a legal forward pass, subject to all the same rules as any other forward pass: it must originate from behind the line, travel forward, and be thrown to an eligible receiver.

In flag football the shovel pass functions as a quick screen element, getting the ball immediately to a slot receiver or running back in the flat before defenders can close. The underhand delivery is faster at short range and easier to control on low, horizontal throws.

Because it looks like a lateral or a backward toss, officials and players sometimes misjudge the direction. The direction of travel—forward from the passer's release point—is what makes it a legal forward pass.

## Example

"The quarterback catches the snap, takes one step forward, and flips it underhand to the receiver crossing two yards past the line. Clean shovel pass—five yards gained before anyone could react."

## Common Confusion

The shovel pass is a forward pass, not a lateral. A lateral travels backward; a shovel pass travels forward even though it is delivered underhand. The delivery style does not determine legality—the direction of travel does.
