# Shallow

## Short Definition

A short crossing route at 3 to 5 yards run by an inside receiver who clears across the formation just above the line of scrimmage.

## Definition

The shallow crossing route is the most reliable yards-after-catch concept in the passing game. The receiver releases from his inside alignment and runs horizontally across the field at 3 to 5 yards—flat and fast, just above the linebackers' drop zones. He catches the ball in stride already moving toward the opposite hash, with open field in front of him.

The shallow works because linebackers can't cover it effectively. If the linebacker drops to the intermediate zone, he's above the shallow receiver and can't close in time. If he sits in a flat zone, the shallow crosses behind him. The only coverage that handles the shallow cleanly is a defender who specifically chases the crosser—which vacates another zone.

In Air Raid systems the shallow is a primary building block—the Y-Cross concept pairs a shallow with a deep crossing route from the opposite side, creating high-low stress on the linebackers' drop zones at two different depths.

The shallow's value is timing and YAC. The receiver has to be running full speed when he catches the ball to maximize his yards after the catch. A receiver who slows down to catch the ball gives defenders time to close; a receiver who catches it in full stride can turn a 4-yard throw into a 12-yard gain.

## Example

"Shallow cross from the slot—the linebacker is six yards deep and can't close before the receiver catches it. He's in stride, turns upfield, and picks up the first down on what was a four-yard throw."

## Common Confusion

Shallow and drag routes are often used interchangeably, but shallow specifically describes a flat horizontal crossing route at 3 to 5 yards caught in stride. Drag routes are similar but sometimes refer to any short crossing action regardless of depth or pace.
