# Separation

## Short Definition

The distance a receiver creates between himself and a defender through route technique, speed, and body positioning—the space that makes a catch possible.

## Definition

Separation is the product of a route run correctly. The receiver uses his release to get past the defender's initial jam, his route stem to move the defender in the wrong direction, and his break to exploit that movement. The result is space—a window the quarterback can throw into.

Separation exists on a spectrum. Elite separation is a receiver coming out of a break with two steps on the defender—clean, unmolested, easy catch. Contested separation is a receiver and defender arriving at the catch point simultaneously—the receiver has to use his body to shield the ball. Some catches happen with no separation at all—the receiver simply outfights the defender for the ball.

Technique creates separation more reliably than speed. A receiver who can sell one direction and break another, who can vary his route timing to take a corner off his break, who can use his hands to defeat a jam—that receiver creates separation in tight coverage. Pure speed creates separation against defenders who can't run, but slows to a speed disadvantage against corners who can.

Quarterbacks and receivers develop a shared language around separation. When a receiver knows the quarterback will throw on a specific count, he times his break accordingly. The separation that creates a window at the right moment is more valuable than separation that arrives too late.

## Example

"The receiver sold the comeback, the corner bit, and the receiver broke inside. Three steps of separation at the exact moment the quarterback was throwing. That's a route run the right way."

## Common Confusion

Separation is confused with open space. A receiver can have separation from his defender while still being covered by a zone. Open refers to the availability of the throw; separation refers to the distance from the nearest defender. A receiver can be open in zone without much separation, or can have separation in man while another defender takes away the throw.
