# Separation Score

## Short Definition

The distance between a receiver and nearest defender at the moment of throw or catch—quantifying route-running effectiveness using player tracking data.

## Definition

Separation score measures the physical distance between a receiver and the nearest defender at the moment the ball is thrown or caught, quantifying how much space a receiver creates through their route running. NFL Next Gen Stats tracks every player's position at every moment using RFID chips in shoulder pads and the ball, enabling precise measurement of the gap a receiver creates against coverage.

A receiver averaging 3.5 yards of separation at the catch point is consistently open; one averaging 1.2 yards is contested on nearly every route. The league average at the catch point falls around 2.5–3.0 yards. Elite route runners who create consistent separation above 4 yards give their quarterback easy decisions and reliable throwing windows even against tight coverage.

Separation also applies at the throw point—the moment the quarterback releases the ball—separate from the catch point. Throw-point separation measures how much space existed when the quarterback made his decision, capturing timing throws to receivers who are open but will be covered by arrival. Catch-point separation measures the actual space when the ball arrives, accounting for the defender's reaction after the ball is in the air.

Teams use separation data in receiver evaluation and in game-planning against specific coverage defenders. A receiver who generates high separation scores against man coverage but low scores against zone has a different schematic profile than one who gets open in both. For quarterbacks, high separation from their receivers inflates completion percentage; low separation forces into tighter windows and may explain artificially low CPOE.

"She's averaging 4.1 yards of separation at the catch point—best on the team. The cornerback across from her is getting beat on every third step. You can see it in the tracking data before the ball even arrives."

## Common Confusion

Separation score measures distance from the nearest defender at the moment of the throw or catch—not whether the receiver was open before the route broke. A receiver who runs a perfect deep route and creates 8 yards of separation by the time the ball arrives scores very differently than one who creates 1 yard of separation on a slant. The score captures the result of route-running effectiveness, not the process.
