## Definition

The secondary is the collective term for the defensive backs—cornerbacks and safeties—who operate behind the linebackers as the last line of pass defense. As a unit, the secondary is responsible for deep coverage, man assignments, zone rotations, and run support from the back end of the defense.

The secondary's communication structure is critical. Before every snap, the safeties are the identification hub—they read the formation, declare the strength, call the coverage, and confirm that every defender has the right assignment. A secondary that doesn't communicate creates coverage busts. A secondary that communicates precisely can execute complex pattern-matching rules against any offensive look.

The secondary also carries run support responsibility. Safeties fit into run lanes from depth; corners set the perimeter force. A secondary that breaks down in run support turns short gains into long ones. Elite secondaries are evaluated not just on pass coverage but on their discipline against the run—especially in forcing ballcarriers back inside to the pursuit.

## Example

"The linebacker call goes to the secondary: safety declares the formation strength, the corner confirms his coverage. Both safeties rotate at the snap. The communication happened in two seconds before the snap, and the entire secondary is in the right position when the ball is thrown. That's a secondary functioning as a unit."

## Common Confusion

Secondary and defensive backfield are used interchangeably. Both refer to the same group. In strict usage, defensive backfield is positional—it describes where the safeties and corners line up. Secondary is the collective noun for those players as a unit—the secondary communicates, rotates, and executes coverage as a group. Both terms are correct; the distinction is positional description versus unit identity.
