# Screen Pass

## Short Definition

A short throw behind or at the line of scrimmage to a receiver with blockers already positioned in front—a designed run play disguised as a pass.

## Definition

The screen pass trades depth for blocking. The quarterback takes a drop, the protection holds briefly to sell a pass, and a receiver—usually a back, tight end, or slot receiver—drifts into the flat as blockers set up in front of him. When the throw arrives, the receiver has a wall of blockers and open field.

Screens are most effective against aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. The harder the defense chases the quarterback, the more linebackers vacate the short zones, and the more room the screen has to operate. Against a defense that sits back in coverage and reads the quarterback's eyes, screens are much easier to sniff out.

The timing is everything. The quarterback has to hold the protection long enough to let the blockers get out, but release the ball before the rush collapses the pocket. Too early and the blockers aren't set; too late and there's no throw to make.

Screens exist in dozens of variations: bubble screens throw the ball immediately to a slot receiver with receivers blocking outside; slip screens get a lineman out quickly to lead an inside receiver; jailbreak screens get multiple blockers out in front of a sprinting receiver.

"They sold the pass rush perfectly—the defensive end ran right past the back drifting into the flat. By the time anyone reacted, the back had two blockers and ten yards of space."

## Common Confusion

Screens are confused with dump-offs. A dump-off is a hot read or a last resort when the primary routes aren't open—the quarterback checks down to an available receiver with no blocking set up. A screen is designed: the blocking is pre-arranged and the quarterback knows the throw is going there before the snap.
