# SAM

## Short Definition

The strongside linebacker, aligned to the formation strength—typically the tight end side or the side with more receivers.

## Definition

The Sam is the linebacker aligned to the strong side of the offensive formation. Traditionally, strength is declared to the tight end, but in modern football the Sam can be set to the side with more receivers, the field side, or the formation's declared passing strength.

The Sam's responsibilities are the most physically demanding of the linebacker positions—he's aligned closest to potential blockers (tight ends, fullbacks, H-backs) and must defend both runs to his side and routes from the tight end in the passing game. He's the force player in many schemes, responsible for setting the edge on outside runs to the tight end side.

As offenses have moved away from tight end formations, many defenses have moved the Sam into an apex alignment—outside the tackle box, threatening both the run and coverage responsibilities.

## Example

"Sam is walked up to the strong side—tight end has to account for him on the snap, which changes the blocking scheme. The offense can't just run at the strength."

## Common Confusion

The Sam's alignment changes based on how the offense declares formation strength. He's not always on the right or always on the left—he sets to strength, wherever that is. In spread formations, his alignment becomes its own pre-snap communication problem.
