## Definition

The salary cap is the maximum amount of money each NFL team may spend on player salaries in a given league year, set annually by the NFL and NFLPA under the CBA as a percentage of league revenues. As the NFL's media and sponsorship revenue grows, the cap rises accordingly.

Every contract counts toward the cap at some level. Signing bonuses are prorated across the contract's life for cap purposes, allowing teams to reduce the immediate cap hit of large deals by spreading the bonus over multiple years. This proration mechanism is the foundation of most cap management strategies.

The salary cap creates the fundamental constraint behind every major roster decision: trades, extensions, releases, and draft picks all interact with available cap space. Teams that manage the cap efficiently maintain deep rosters and competitive free agent options. Teams that misallocate cap money through large guaranteed deals for underperforming players face years of limited flexibility.

## Common Confusion

Salary cap and cap space are different. The cap is the league-wide limit every team operates under. Cap space is how much room a specific team has left under that limit after existing contracts. A team can have cap space this year while being over the cap in future years through restructured deals.
