# Safety (Scoring Play)

## Short Definition

A two-point score awarded to the defense when the offense is downed in their own end zone.

## Definition

A safety occurs when a ball carrier has their flag pulled while in possession behind their own goal line—in their own end zone. The defense scores 2 points.

In flag football a safety most often results from a snap that sails into the end zone, a quarterback taking a sack in the end zone, or a receiver catching a pass in their own end zone and having their flag pulled immediately before getting out.

After a safety, the offense retains possession and typically kicks off or punts from their own 20-yard line. The defense cannot score by advancing the ball after a safety—the 2 points are awarded and the ball changes possession through a kick.

## Example

"The snap bounces over the quarterback's head into the end zone. She recovers it but her flag is pulled immediately before she can run it out. Safety—two points for the defense."

## Common Confusion

A safety is not a turnover—the offense keeps possession after the score and restarts with a kick. Also: the safety scoring play and the safety defensive position share the same name. Context determines which is being discussed.
