# Safety (Defensive Position)

## Short Definition

A deep defensive back responsible for protecting against long completions and providing help coverage behind the cornerbacks.

## Definition

The safety is the last line of defense. In 5v5 flag, the safety typically plays 8 to 12 yards off the line, reading the quarterback's eyes and the receiver releases before committing to coverage or run support.

In Cover 1, one safety plays free in the deep middle—roaming, reading, and creating interception opportunities. In Cover 3, the safety anchors the middle deep third while the corners own the outside thirds.

The safety's most important skill in flag football is the 1-Rat technique: lurking at intermediate depth, reading the QB's eyes, and anticipating routes rather than reacting to them. A safety who sits passively is easy to exploit. One who reads and attacks creates turnovers.

## Example

"The safety reads the tight end climbing the seam, drifts to the middle third, and is already in position before the ball arrives. That's the 1-Rat technique working exactly as designed."

## Common Confusion

Safety the defensive position and safety the scoring play share the same word—context determines which is meant. The position is a coverage role; the score occurs when a ball carrier is downed in their own end zone.
