# Sack

## Short Definition

A tackle of the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage while he is in possession of the ball attempting to pass—costing the offense both yardage and a down.

## Definition

A sack occurs when the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage while in possession of the ball and in the act of attempting to pass. It costs the offense both yards and a down—a sack on second and eight becomes third and 15, transforming a manageable conversion into a difficult one. A sack on third down ends the possession.

The pass rush generates sacks. If the quarterback gets the ball out quickly, the rush has no time to arrive. A blitz trades coverage for a faster rush; a four-man rush trades rush speed for coverage integrity. The best pass rushers make both of those calculations irrelevant by winning before the protection can establish.

Sacks matter beyond the immediate loss of yards. They change down and distance, affect field position on the subsequent punt, disrupt quarterback rhythm, and accumulate psychological pressure across a game. A quarterback who has been sacked multiple times in a game is more likely to throw off his back foot, release early, and take risks he shouldn't—compounding the effect of the initial sack.

The sack statistic was officially adopted by the NFL in 1982. Before that it was recorded simply as a run for negative yards.

## Example

"Quarterback drops back, the left tackle can't reach the end on the speed rush. End turns the corner and closes in three steps, brings the quarterback down at the 22-yard line. Third and 15. One sack completely changed the situation."

## Common Confusion

A sack and a tackle for loss are related but distinct. A tackle for loss applies to any ball carrier brought down behind the line of scrimmage—runners included. A sack is specifically a tackle of the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage on a passing play. All sacks are tackles for loss; not all tackles for loss are sacks.
