## Short Definition

An offensive player who lines up behind the quarterback and serves primarily as a check-down receiver, motion threat, or ball carrier on handoffs.

## Definition

In flag football, the running back's role shifts significantly from tackle football. Physical blocking doesn't exist, so the running back's primary value is as a receiving outlet in the flat, a motion threat that forces defensive adjustments, and—where the rules allow—a ball carrier on designed handoffs.

Many 5v5 flag formations don't use a traditional running back at all, instead spreading all five players as pass catchers in Air Raid-style alignments. When a running back does take a handoff, the free rush rule triggers immediately—every defender becomes a legal pursuer.

As a receiver, the running back typically works the flat, the checkdown, and underneath crossing routes—high-percentage throws that turn short gains into positive plays.

## Example

"The running back swings into the flat on the check-down—the quarterback hits her in stride at the numbers, flag pulled 9 yards past the line. That's a running back functioning as the outlet receiver."

## Common Confusion

Running backs in flag football are primarily receivers and motion threats, not power runners. A handoff to a running back triggers the free rush—all defenders can pursue immediately. The run game functions very differently than in tackle football because there is no blocking.
