# Right Tackle

## Short Definition

The offensive lineman on the right edge protecting the quarterback's open side—setting the edge against the defense's second-best edge rusher on every snap.

## Definition

The right tackle holds the edge on the quarterback's open side—the side a right-handed quarterback faces during his drop and can see developing. A pass rusher who beats the right tackle creates visible, anticipated pressure, which is more manageable than blind-side pressure—but a collapsed edge on the right still eliminates the pocket and forces the quarterback to scramble or throw under pressure. The right tackle has to win his matchup just as reliably as the left tackle.

On runs to his side, the right tackle is the critical edge-setter. On outside zone, he works to reach or kick out the defensive end and seal the perimeter. On gap schemes, he down-blocks inside or releases to a second-level defender depending on the design. His athleticism determines how effectively he can execute the zone-reach scheme—a tackle who can't get to a 5-tech on outside zone on his side of the formation limits the run game's perimeter attack.

The right tackle typically faces the defense's second-best edge rusher rather than the premier pass rusher, who usually attacks the left tackle or rotates across the formation. That designation is relative—on many teams, the second-best edge rusher is a legitimate all-pro caliber player who brings full pass-rush sophistication. The right tackle cannot afford to treat the matchup as lesser simply because the assignment carries lower public profile.

In protection schemes with slide away from the right side, the right tackle holds the edge alone—no help inside from a sliding guard. These one-on-one edge protections are the most demanding individual assignments the position faces, requiring footwork, hand technique, and anchor strength without the option of passing the rusher to a helper when beat to a move.

## Example

"Right tackle one-on-one with the defensive end on third and eight. The end spins at the two-second mark. The tackle stays square, punches at the inside number as the spin starts, redirects him wide. Quarterback feels a clean pocket and delivers on time. The right tackle won a matchup nobody saw."

## Common Confusion

Right tackle is sometimes seen as the easier tackle position because it's on the quarterback's open side. The edge rusher he faces is still an elite athlete trying to reach the quarterback in under three seconds. The position demands every bit of the athleticism and technique the left tackle role requires.
