# RPO

## Short Definition

Run-Pass Option—a play where the quarterback reads a specific defender post-snap and decides in real time whether to hand off or throw.

## Definition

The RPO puts a single defender in an impossible position. One player cannot be both a run defender and a pass defender on the same play. The offense blocks for a run, releases a receiver into a route, and the quarterback reads the unblocked defender between them: if he plays the run, the quarterback throws; if he drops to cover the route, the quarterback hands off.

The design eliminates the defender from the equation. The offensive line blocks as if it's a run. One receiver runs a route without any blocker. The quarterback watches one pre-designated defender—usually a linebacker or a safety—and responds to his movement.

RPOs exist along a spectrum of read distance. Bubble RPOs are quick horizontal reads—the quarterback catches the snap, looks immediately to the flat, and either throws the bubble or hands off. Inside zone RPOs give the quarterback a beat to watch the linebacker's first step before deciding. The decision window is always short: the line is blocking, not pass protecting.

The legal complexity is real. Offensive linemen cannot be more than one yard past the line of scrimmage on a passing play. RPO timing has to keep linemen close to the line long enough for the quarterback to make his read and throw.

## Example

"The linebacker is aligned to the run—he starts to flow toward the handoff. The quarterback sees it immediately and throws the slant. The linebacker can't get back to cover it."

## Common Confusion

Play-action and RPO are genuinely different. In play-action, the decision to throw is made before the snap—the fake is designed deception. In an RPO, the quarterback reads a defender post-snap and makes a real decision. The handoff could happen; it's not faked.
