The numbered system of passing routes—1 through 9, odd numbers breaking inside and even outside—giving quarterbacks and receivers a shared vocabulary.

## Definition

The route tree is the organizing system for all the routes a receiver can run, typically numbered 1 through 9, with odd numbers breaking inside and even numbers breaking outside. The number corresponds to a specific route shape—slant, out, post, corner—and every receiver in the system runs the same route when given the same number, regardless of alignment.

The tree metaphor comes from structure: every route begins with the same vertical stem—the first 5-7 yards are identical before the route breaks. A defender watching the stem alone cannot identify the break until the receiver commits. Routes 1-9 progress from shallow to deep, with inside and outside variants creating the full range of concepts.

The numbering creates a shared vocabulary. When the quarterback calls a route combination, receivers know their assignments immediately from the number: a 96 sends the outside receiver on a post (9) and the slot on a corner (6). No elaboration needed—the number contains all the information.

Modern offenses add named routes beyond the numbered tree—hitch, shallow, stick, mesh—that operate within the same organizational logic. The tree is the foundation; the additions are concepts layered on top of it.

## Example

"The quarterback signals '96.' Outside receiver knows he's running the post. Slot knows he's running the corner. No huddle, no confusion. Snap, post clears the safety, corner route finds the void. The route tree gave both players their assignment in one number."

## Common Confusion

The route tree is a system, not a specific route. "Running a route tree" in practice means a receiver is working through the complete set of routes. In a game, any individual play calls specific routes from that tree. The tree organizes all routes; a play calls particular ones from it.
