## Definition

A route combination is a designed grouping of two or more receiver routes that work together to stress a specific coverage structure simultaneously. The routes are not assigned independently—they are coordinated to create geometric conflicts that no single route can produce. A flat-curl combination puts one receiver shallow in the flat and one receiver curling at 12 yards, creating a high-low stretch on the same underneath defender that forces him to choose which threat to cover.

Route combinations are designed with a specific coverage in mind. Smash attacks Cover 2 with a hitch-corner combination that creates a vertical stretch on the cornerback responsible for the flat. Four verticals attacks zone coverage by flooding every deep zone simultaneously. Mesh attacks man coverage by creating traffic at the crossing point. Each combination has a target coverage it is specifically designed to defeat.

The quarterback's read on a route combination follows the coverage's movement. Against the target coverage, the combination creates an automatic answer—the quarterback throws to whichever receiver the defense left open. If the defense presents a different coverage, the quarterback recognizes it and either finds the hot adjustment or moves to a different combination on his progression.

## Example

"Flat-curl combination to the right: slot runs the flat, outside receiver curls at 12. The linebacker drops to the curl. Quarterback throws flat. The linebacker drops to the flat. Quarterback throws the curl. The combination forces the defender to be wrong—he can't cover both."

## Common Confusion

Route combination and play are not the same. A play includes the full package—protection, run fake or not, all five eligible receiver assignments. A route combination is specifically the designed grouping of routes to one side or across the formation intended to stress a specific coverage. Multiple route combinations can exist within a single play design.
