## Definition

A roster bonus is a payment triggered when a player is on the team's roster on a specified date—typically the start of the league year, the start of training camp, or the first day of the regular season. Unlike a signing bonus paid upfront regardless of roster status, a roster bonus requires the player to actually be on the team at the trigger date to collect. Teams can avoid paying the roster bonus by releasing the player before that date.

Roster bonuses give teams a deadline-driven escape valve. A contract that includes a $5M roster bonus due on the third day of the new league year presents the team with a clear decision point: keep the player and pay the bonus, or release them before the date and avoid the charge. This is why March becomes a period of roster moves—teams evaluating veterans with upcoming roster bonuses must decide whether the player is worth retaining at the effective cost.

From a cap perspective, roster bonuses count against the cap fully in the year they are paid. They do not prorate like signing bonuses, which means they create no future dead cap obligation if the player is released after payment—unlike restructured bonus money that leaves prorated charges. This makes roster bonuses useful for teams that want to add compensation in a specific year without creating long-term cap complexity.

Roster bonuses also appear in restructured contracts as a mechanism to front-load cash payment in a given year. Converting some base salary to a roster bonus doesn't change the cap accounting the same way converting to a signing bonus does, but it changes when the cash changes hands, which matters for the player's financial planning and for certain team accounting purposes.

"$6M roster bonus due March 20th—the team has to decide by then. Keep him and pay it, or cut him beforehand and save the money. That's the deadline that's been driving the roster speculation all week."

## Common Confusion

A roster bonus is not the same as a signing bonus—it is not prorated across contract years. A roster bonus counts fully against the cap in the year it is paid. Teams use roster bonuses to add year-specific compensation without creating prorated charges that linger as dead cap after a potential cut.
