## Definition

Every drafted player enters the NFL on a rookie contract—a four-year deal with compensation set by the CBA's rookie wage scale, which assigns a specific dollar value to each pick in the draft. Higher picks earn more; the scale is fixed and non-negotiable for drafted players.

First-round picks receive fully guaranteed salaries on their rookie contracts. Later-round picks receive partial guarantees. The fixed scale was introduced in the 2011 CBA to control costs after high-profile busts received enormous guaranteed contracts before playing a professional snap.

At the end of the four years, players are either extended, franchise-tagged, or allowed to reach free agency. First-round picks have a fifth-year option the team can exercise to retain them for a fifth season before free agency. Teams that identify their franchise players early often extend them before the rookie deal expires, converting the remaining years into a longer-term commitment.

"Drafted 12th overall—he's locked in for four years at slot value, fully guaranteed. The team has four years to find out if the evaluation was right before he can test the market."

## Common Confusion

Rookie contracts are not negotiable—the scale is set by the CBA and applies uniformly to all drafted players. Holdouts by rookies over contract structure are rare compared to the pre-2011 era when top picks negotiated enormous individual signing bonuses before ever taking an NFL snap.
