# Rollout

## Short Definition

A lateral quarterback movement outside the pocket—changing the launch point, altering throwing angles, and eliminating backside pass rush.

## Definition

A rollout moves the quarterback laterally outside the traditional pocket before or during the pass, relocating the launch point to the edge of the formation. The quarterback runs parallel to the line of scrimmage in one direction while receivers run routes designed for his new position and field angle.

Rolling out creates a new throwing platform and changes the defensive coverage problem. Defenders who aligned to the original pocket now face a quarterback throwing from the hash or sideline area with different angles. Backside defenders are taken out of the play entirely by the quarterback's movement away from them.

Rollout is most effective when the quarterback is mobile enough to threaten a run if coverage isn't there. A defender who has to account for both the throw and the keeper has a two-way problem. A quarterback who only threatens the throw on a rollout gives the edge defender a simpler read.

In flag football, rollout is a primary tool for creating separation between the quarterback and the rusher, extending the time before the pass clock or the rusher forces the throw.

## Example

"Quarterback rolls right—the pocket moves with him. Receivers run routes for his new position on the hash. Backside pressure is irrelevant—they're chasing from the wrong side. Clean platform, corner route, completion."

## Common Confusion

Rollout and bootleg describe similar movements but from different origins. A bootleg is specifically built on a play-action fake—the QB sells the run, then rolls away. A rollout moves the pocket laterally without necessarily needing a run fake first. All bootlegs are rollouts; not all rollouts are bootlegs.
