A riser is a prospect whose draft stock has improved during the evaluation process—moving up boards based on standout all-star game performance, strong Combine or pro day testing, positive interviews, or favorable medical clearances. The movement is relative: a riser was projected lower and is now projected higher.

Risers generate some of the most compelling draft conversation because they represent changed evaluations. A riser during Senior Bowl week typically played well in practices where NFL coaches could see his technique up close. A riser post-Combine ran or jumped better than expected, confirming athleticism the film suggested but couldn't fully measure.

Not all rising stock reflects genuine talent improvement—some movement comes from the volume of positive media coverage or team visit activity that signals interest. Experienced draft followers distinguish between a riser whose tape has been reexamined and confirmed versus one whose stock has been inflated by process optics.

## Example

"He was a day-three projection in January. Senior Bowl week he lined up against first-round corners every day and won. By the end of the week every analyst had him in round two. That's a riser—the evaluation changed because the competition revealed something new."

## Common Confusion

A riser and a first-round prospect aren't the same thing. A riser is defined by movement—a player whose stock has improved relative to where it was, regardless of whether he's a top pick or a late-round projection. A seventh-round player who moves into the fifth round is a riser.
