# Rip / Liz

## Short Definition

Formation strength calls in Saban-tree systems—Rip declares strength right, Liz declares strength left, setting each defender's coverage assignment.

## Definition

Rip and Liz are formation strength calls in Saban-tree pattern-match coverage systems—two words that communicate the entire secondary's coverage orientation before the snap. Rip declares that the offense's passing strength is to the right; Liz declares that it is to the left. Each call triggers a complete set of pre-assigned coverage responsibilities for every defensive back and linebacker based on which side of the field the formation's passing strength is aligned to. One word replaces a full coverage description.

The speed efficiency is the design purpose. Spread offenses use tempo to prevent defenses from substituting and communicating; pre-snap identification must happen in seconds, not during a full huddle communication sequence. A Rip or Liz call made by the Mike linebacker or a safety the moment the offense breaks the huddle gives every defender their assignment before the quarterback approaches the line. The cornerback to the Rip side knows his coverage leverage, the safety to the Rip side knows his rotation key, and the linebackers know their run-fit priorities—all from one word.

Rip and Liz also function as formation adjustment signals. When the offense motions a receiver from one side to the other, potentially changing the passing strength designation, the Rip or Liz call updates from the previous declaration to the new one. A Rip call that becomes a Liz call after motion tells every defender to flip their assignments—field-strength coverage responsibilities move to the new strength side, and boundary responsibilities move to the new boundary side. This re-communication happens instantly because every defender already knows what the Rip and Liz assignments are; they only need to know which one to execute.

The calls derive from Lionel and Rita in some Saban-tree systems—the left and right designations share historical roots with the Rita/Linda rotation calls but serve a distinct function in pattern-match systems. Rita and Linda confirm rotation direction within an established coverage; Rip and Liz establish the coverage orientation from which rotation and assignment rules are derived. Both are pre-snap communication tools; they operate at different layers of the coverage communication hierarchy.

## Example

"Offense breaks the huddle—trips right. Mike calls Rip immediately. Every defender now knows their assignment: safety keys #2 to the trips, corner to the single side has boundary rules, linebackers set run fits based on the strength declaration. One word organized the entire defense."

## Common Confusion

Rip/Liz and Rita/Linda are similar rotation communication systems that are often conflated. Rita/Linda signals the direction safeties rotate in Saban-tree Cover 3 structures. Rip/Liz signals strength declaration and coverage rotation rules in pattern-match single-high systems—Rip declares the formation as right-oriented, Liz as left, and each triggers specific coverage assignments from that declaration.
