## Definition

The right guard mirrors the left guard's responsibilities on the right side of the formation—B-gap ownership, combination blocks with the center and right tackle, and pulling duties on gap schemes. The position carries identical physical and intellectual demands to the left guard: strength to anchor against a 3-tech in one-on-one run situations, athleticism to pull and lead through holes, and communication ability to coordinate combination blocks with adjacent linemen in real time.

In zone run schemes, the right guard works in combination with the center against shaded interior defenders. The two must execute a double-team on a shaded nose or 3-tech and then release one player to the second level while the other sustains the block. The decision of who climbs to the linebacker is made post-snap based on the linebacker's movement—requiring both players to read the same information simultaneously and execute complementary decisions without hesitation.

On gap schemes, the right guard either pulls playside to lead block or down-blocks to create the hole at the point of attack. A right guard who pulls on power or counter is leading through the interior at full speed—his kick-out or log block at the hole either creates the lane or creates a pile. The timing of his pull relative to the snap and the ball carrier's read determines whether the blocking creates space or noise.

In pass protection, the right guard's primary assignment is protecting the inside gap on the right—preventing stunts and interior blitzes from creating free rushers through the B-gap beside the right tackle. His coordination with the right tackle on combo rushes—where one defender crosses behind another to create blocking assignment confusion—is a daily drill requirement at the professional level.

"Right guard reaches the 3-tech on outside zone—the defensive tackle cross-faces trying to escape the block, the guard seals him backside. That seal created the cut lane for the back. Interior blocking is usually why zone runs work, and the guard's one-on-one with the 3-tech is the specific battle within the play."

## Common Confusion

Guards are evaluated in aggregate—the offensive line as a unit. Individually, the right guard's ability to handle a shaded 3-tech in one-on-one situations is one of the biggest factors in whether inside runs succeed. The B-gap battle between the guard and the defensive tackle is often the play within the play.
