Converting base salary to signing bonus to reduce the current cap hit—spreading charges into future years, increasing dead cap risk if the player is later cut.

## Definition

A contract restructure converts a portion of a player's base salary into a signing bonus, immediately lowering the current year's cap hit while spreading the converted amount as prorated charges across remaining contract years. A player with a $20M base salary might have $15M converted to a signing bonus—reducing the current cap hit by roughly $12M while adding prorated charges of $3M per year across four remaining seasons.

Restructures are the primary tool NFL teams use to create cap space in the current year without cutting players. When a team is over the cap heading into free agency or the draft, restructuring veterans' contracts is the first adjustment most cap analysts expect. The mechanism is legal under the CBA and widely used across all 32 teams.

The tradeoff is accelerated dead cap risk. Each restructure adds prorated bonus money to future years. If the player is cut before the contract expires, all remaining prorated amounts accelerate into the current year as dead cap. Teams that restructure the same player multiple times accumulate significant dead cap exposure—cutting the player becomes increasingly expensive, effectively locking them into the roster.

Teams must balance short-term flexibility against long-term constraint. Restructuring a 32-year-old player's contract to create this year's cap space may save the season but create a dead cap problem in two years when the player declines. Analysts track cumulative restructures per player as an indicator of which veterans a team cannot afford to cut.

"They needed $12 million before the draft—restructured their left tackle's deal, converted base to bonus, spread it across four years. Cap space today, future obligation deferred."

## Common Confusion

A restructure doesn't reduce total money paid—it converts base salary to signing bonus, lowering the current cap hit while spreading charges into future years. The player gets paid the same; the cap timing changes. Future dead cap risk increases with each restructure.
