## Definition

A restricted free agent is a player with three accrued NFL seasons whose contract has expired. Unlike unrestricted free agents, restricted free agents cannot sign freely with any team—their original team retains the right to match any offer sheet the player receives from another team within a set window, typically five days. If the original team matches, the player stays at the offered terms. If they decline to match, the player moves and the original team receives draft compensation based on the tender level.

Teams control restricted free agents by tendering them—extending a one-year qualifying offer at one of several compensation levels set by the CBA. The tender level determines both the player's salary if they stay and the draft pick compensation a team receives if they don't match. Higher tender levels cost more but generate higher compensation if the player is poached.

Restricted free agency creates leverage situations. A player who wants to change teams must find a team willing to sign an offer sheet knowing the original team can match it—many teams avoid this process because it wastes negotiating resources. Agents sometimes engineer offer sheets at specific values designed to either compel matching at a fair market rate or trigger valuable compensation if the original team declines.

The market for restricted free agents is therefore thinner than unrestricted free agency. Players eligible for RFA status who believe they are underpaid relative to the market often prefer to play out the year, accumulate a fourth accrued season, and enter unrestricted free agency with full market access the following spring.

## Common Confusion

A restricted free agent is not fully free—their original team can match any offer sheet and retain them at that price. True open-market freedom requires four accrued seasons and unrestricted status. An RFA may receive a lucrative offer sheet and still never change teams if the original team matches.
