# Red Zone

## Short Definition

The area from the opponent's 20-yard line to the goal line where the offense has field position to score but space is compressed.

## Definition

The red zone is the final 20 yards before the end zone—the area where the offense has advanced far enough that scoring is the primary objective of the possession. The name comes from the heightened urgency and danger of the situation for the defense.

In the red zone, defense has inherent advantages: the field compresses, receivers have less room to separate, and the deep portion of the field disappears. Defenses in the red zone often shift to tighter man coverage or compressed zone structures because there is simply less space to defend.

Red zone efficiency—the percentage of red zone possessions that result in touchdowns—is one of the most important team statistics in football. A team that consistently scores touchdowns rather than field goals in the red zone has a significant advantage over the course of a game.

In flag football with a no-run zone inside the 5-yard line, the final 5 yards create an additional strategic constraint beyond general red zone pressure.

## Example

"They've moved the ball all the way to the 14-yard line—they're in the red zone now. Defense tightens into two-deep man. Everything has to be sharp from here."

## Common Confusion

The red zone is a strategic concept, not a marked boundary on the field. There is no line painted at the 20-yard line designating it. The term refers to the compressed-field scoring territory and the statistical threshold used to evaluate offense and defense. Some analysts use the 'green zone' for the area between 20 and 40 yards.
