# Read

## Short Definition

A specific defender or coverage indicator the quarterback uses to determine where the ball should go—the decision-making unit of every pass concept.

## Definition

A read is a specific defender or coverage indicator the quarterback uses to determine where the ball should go—the decision unit that converts coverage information into a throw. Every pass play includes at least one built-in read, and most include a sequence of reads organized into a progression. The read identifies which defender the quarterback watches, what that defender's movement means, and which receiver becomes the correct target based on the answer.

Reads operate at two levels: pre-snap and post-snap. A pre-snap read identifies the coverage structure before the ball is snapped—two high safeties suggest split-field zone coverage; a single high safety suggests man or Cover 3; walked-up linebackers suggest blitz. Pre-snap reads allow the quarterback to eliminate coverage possibilities and narrow the post-snap decision before the play begins. An experienced quarterback who reads pre-snap cover 2 already knows the deep middle is protected and the flat is soft before the center snaps the ball.

Post-snap reads confirm or change the pre-snap assessment. Defenses disguise coverages by showing one shell before the snap and rotating to another at the snap—a two-high shell that rotates to single-high at the snap is a common disguise that tricks quarterbacks who commit to a pre-snap read too firmly. The post-snap read watches a key defender—typically a linebacker or safety—whose movement reveals the coverage structure and indicates which throw is correct. If the linebacker expands to the flat, the middle is open; if he drops to the middle, the flat is open. The read converts the linebacker's decision into a quarterback decision.

In option-based run games, the read extends beyond the passing game. A zone-read run has the quarterback reading the unblocked defensive end—if the end crashes inside, the quarterback keeps; if he stays outside, the quarterback hands off. The read concept in run game and pass game shares the same structure: identify a defender, watch his movement, execute the correct answer based on what he does. The defender makes the decision; the quarterback executes it.

## Example

"The quarterback isn't looking at the receiver—he's reading the linebacker. If that linebacker drops, the receiver behind him is open. If the linebacker stays, the check-down to the flat is the throw. He's not deciding where to throw; the linebacker is deciding for him."

## Common Confusion

A read is not the same as a look. A quarterback who looks at a receiver and sees coverage is making an observation. A quarterback who reads a linebacker—watching where that defender moves before committing to a throw—is making a decision based on structured information. A read has a built-in if/then: if the linebacker drops, throw the crosser; if the linebacker stays, throw the flat. Looking at a receiver tells you what is covered; reading a defender tells you what will be open.
