# Read Progression

## Short Definition

The predetermined sequence of receivers a quarterback works through on a given play, from primary to secondary to checkdown.

## Definition

Every pass play has a built-in order of reads. Before the snap, the quarterback identifies the coverage and decides which receiver fits the coverage best—that's the primary read. After the snap, if the primary read isn't open, he moves to the secondary read. If that's covered, he goes to the checkdown.

Different systems teach different progression structures. Half-field progressions ask the quarterback to work two to three receivers on one side of the field before pivoting away. Full-field progressions move the quarterback from one end of the formation to the other. High-low progressions pair two receivers in a vertical stack and read a single defender between them.

The speed of the progression is determined by the protection. If the quarterback has a three-step drop, the ball has to come out quickly—he might only get through one read before throwing or running. With a five-step drop and good protection, he has time to work through two or three receivers.

Progression discipline is what separates functional passers from great ones. A quarterback who skips to his second read too early misses the primary and gives up an easy completion. One who stares at his first read too long misses the window on his second.

## Example

"First read covered, second read covered—he goes to the back on the checkdown. Three reads in about two seconds. That's a quarterback working through a full progression."

## Common Confusion

Progressions are confused with sight adjustments or hot reads. A hot read is triggered by a blitz—it bypasses the full progression and goes to a predetermined quick throw. A progression works through coverage, not pressure.
