# Reach

## Short Definition

Selecting a prospect significantly earlier than his consensus draft grade—taking a player before the point most boards projected him available.

## Definition

A reach is selecting a prospect significantly earlier than his consensus draft grade—taking a player at a pick where most evaluators believe better talent was still available. The pick is judged against the board, not against the team's need: if a player was widely graded as a third-round talent and a team takes him in the first, that's a reach regardless of how much the team needed the position.

Reaches carry risk because the draft's efficiency relies on the board reflecting genuine talent evaluation. Teams that draft ahead of consensus grades are betting their private evaluation is more accurate than the broader market. Sometimes they're right—a player teams loved but media boards undervalued succeeds and reframes the perception. More often, reaches are reaches because the consensus captured something real.

The line between a reach and a valued player is contested. Teams frequently argue they're not reaching—they valued the player correctly and took him where their board said to. The reach label is applied by outside observers and resolved by performance over time.

## Example

"Every board had him as a third-round player. They took him at 19. The room went quiet. That's a reach—not because the pick is wrong, but because the gap between where he was graded and where he was taken requires an explanation the team owes itself."

## Common Confusion

A reach and a need pick aren't the same thing. Taking a player because of positional need isn't a reach unless he was also picked earlier than his talent warranted. A team can address a need without reaching—if the player at their position of need grades where they picked him. A reach is specifically about the gap between talent grade and selection position.
