## Definition

A raw prospect is a player with elite physical traits but limited technique refinement and football experience. The tools are evident—size, speed, athleticism—but skill development hasn't caught up to the physical gifts yet. Raw prospects require significant coaching investment before their traits translate consistently at the NFL level.

Raw prospects typically come from two backgrounds: players who switched sports late with limited competitive repetitions, or players from smaller programs where coaching quality didn't develop their technique despite elite physical ability.

The appeal is the ceiling the tools project. If technique can be developed, a raw prospect with elite traits can become something a more polished but physically limited player never will. The risk is that the technique never arrives and the traits alone aren't sufficient.

## Example

"Two years of organized football. The athleticism is undeniable—40 time, length, explosiveness. But the hand usage, the pass rush plan, the leverage—all raw. If the coaching gets to him, you might have something."

## Common Confusion

Raw and developmental are closely related but not identical. A raw prospect lacks technique polish. A developmental prospect is the broader category—includes raw players but also technically solid players who aren't ready for NFL demands yet.
