## Definition

The Relative Athletic Score is a composite metric created by analyst Kent Lee Platte that combines a prospect's Combine testing results into a single score from 0 to 10. The score is calculated by comparing the prospect's performance in each drill—40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, 3-cone, short shuttle, and bench press—to every player at that same position who has ever been tested. A 10.00 is the best athletic profile ever recorded at the position; a 5.00 is exactly average.

RAS provides context that raw numbers alone don't offer. A 4.55 forty is fast for an offensive lineman and slow for a receiver—RAS normalizes those expectations by position. A prospect can see his athletic profile compared to historical comps at his position, revealing whether he's a rare athlete or an average one within his positional context.

The metric has become widely used in draft analysis and player development circles as a shorthand for athletic profile summary. Its value is in standardization—it lets analysts compare athletic investment across positions with a single number rather than requiring positional context for every individual measurement.

## Example

"He ran a 4.72 at the Combine—sounds slow until you see his RAS is 8.4 for an interior offensive lineman. That 4.72 is elite at his position. RAS removes the context you'd otherwise need to carry in your head for every positional comparison."

## Common Confusion

RAS and Combine testing are related but different. Combine testing produces raw numbers—a 4.45 forty, a 36-inch vertical. RAS converts those raw numbers into a single composite score by comparing them to every player ever tested at the same position. A 9.5 RAS means the prospect tested better than 95 percent of players at his position historically.
