# RAM/LION

## Short Definition

A defensive line slant call where Ram shifts the front right and Lion shifts left—both executed simultaneously at the snap to disrupt interior gaps.

## Definition

RAM and LION are front slant calls that direct the entire defensive line to gap-charge simultaneously in a single direction at the snap. RAM shifts the front to the right—every lineman attacks the gap to his right. LION shifts the front to the left. All linemen execute at the same instant, creating a coordinated interior disruption that offensive lines struggle to redirect against.

The power of the simultaneous charge is that it forces every offensive lineman to deal with a moving target at the snap. Zone blocking schemes depend on linemen reaching and redirecting. A RAM or LION charge arrives in gaps before those reach blocks can establish. Interior gaps open on the unslanted side while the linemen are occupying the slanted gaps.

RAM/LION is often paired with a linebacker or safety filling from the unslanted side—the charge creates the disruption, and the fill player runs into the vacated gap.

## Example

"LION—all four linemen slant left at the snap. Watch the offensive line: everyone has to redirect to their left simultaneously. The right-side gaps open up. The Sam linebacker fills right into the B-gap the 3-tech vacated. That coordinated slant is the entire play."

## Common Confusion

RAM/LION is confused with a stunt or twist. A stunt involves two defenders exchanging gaps post-snap—one goes inside, one loops outside. RAM/LION is a simultaneous gap-charge by all linemen in one direction at the snap. No exchanges, no loops. Every defender hits his assigned gap immediately on the snap count.
