# Punter

## Short Definition

The specialist who handles fourth-down punts—dropping and kicking before the ball hits the ground to exchange possession for field position.

## Definition

The punter's job is to kick the ball downfield on fourth down, surrendering possession in exchange for field position. He receives the long snap directly from the long snapper, drops the ball, and kicks it before it hits the ground. Hang time and net yards are the primary performance measures—how long the ball stays in the air determines whether gunners can arrive to limit the return.

Punt placement is as important as distance. A punter who can direct the ball toward the sideline forces the returner into a compressed return lane. A punt that goes out of bounds eliminates the return entirely and spots the ball at the out-of-bounds point. A perfect coffin-corner punt—downed inside the opponent's five without a touchback—is the highest-value punt outcome.

Modern punters are also quarterbacks on fake punt plays. A punter who can throw and run opens the possibility of fake punts that attack an unprepared defense, adding leverage to the kicking game beyond the straightforward exchange of possession for field position.

## Example

"Fourth and seven at their own 28—punter takes the snap, gets good height on the kick, 47-yard hang time. Gunner gets there just as the returner catches it. Fair catch at the 19. That's 53 net yards. The punter just flipped field position for the defense."

## Common Confusion

Punter and kicker are different positions. A kicker handles field goals, extra points, and kickoffs; a punter handles only punts. The two require different techniques—a placekick comes off a holder's spot, a punt is dropped and kicked before it hits the ground. At the professional level they are almost always separate specialists, though some teams use one player for both.
