## Short Definition

A fourth-down kick surrendering possession to gain field position—made by dropping and kicking the ball before it hits the ground.

## Definition

A punt is a kick made by dropping the ball and kicking it before it hits the ground, used on fourth down to surrender possession in exchange for field position. When the offense can't convert and isn't in field goal range, punting pushes the opponent toward their own goal line. The farther back the opponent starts, the longer they have to drive to score.

The punt team's objective is maximizing net yards—the distance between where the ball was punted from and where the opponent takes possession after the play. Gunners race downfield at the snap to limit or eliminate the return. A fair catch stops the clock and eliminates the return entirely.

Punt placement matters as much as distance. A high hang-time punt gives gunners more time to arrive at the returner. A low line-drive punt travels faster but gives the returner more space and reaction time. Directional punting—aiming toward the boundary—compresses the return lane and forces the returner to the sideline.

Pinning the opponent inside their own 10-yard line without creating a touchback is one of the most impactful plays in football. A well-executed pin sets up the defense with every advantage and forces the opponent to drive 90+ yards to score.

## Example

"Fourth and four at their own 28—they're not going for it. Punt unit comes out. High hang-time kick, 47 yards, downed at the 25. Net of 47 yards. The opponent has 75 yards to go. That's what a quality punt accomplishes."

## Common Confusion

Punting on fourth down and choosing not to is treated as a conservative versus aggressive decision. The real question is field position math: if the offense punts from its own 30, a 45-yard punt pins the opponent at the 25. Going for it and failing gives the opponent the ball at the 30. The five-yard difference compounds across an entire game of field position decisions.
