# Pump Fake

## Short Definition

A simulated throw without releasing the ball—moving a defender out of position before the quarterback throws to the area his fake just vacated.

## Definition

A pump fake is a throwing motion the quarterback makes without releasing the ball—simulating a throw to one receiver to move a defender, then throwing to a different receiver or the same receiver after the defender has reacted. The motion mimics the actual throw closely enough that a defender in coverage responds to it, displacing his position or turning his hips in the wrong direction.

The pump fake attacks a specific defender's reaction. A safety who drives hard on a pump fake to the flat leaves the deep middle open. A corner whose hips turn on a pump fake to a short route is beaten on the double move that follows. The quarterback reads one defender and uses the fake to move him before committing to the throw.

Timing is the technique. A pump fake that is too subtle doesn't move the defender. A pump fake that takes too long allows the pocket to collapse or the receiver's route to over-develop. The best pump fakes take one deliberate motion—shoulder, arm, eyes all working together—that convinces the defender the ball is coming before the quarterback resets and throws.

In flag football, pump fakes are particularly effective because defenders must honor the throw without the ability to make physical contact that would slow the receiver's separation.

## Example

"Quarterback pumps to the flat—safety drives hard forward. Quarterback resets and throws the post behind where the safety was. The pump fake moved the safety six yards from where he needed to be. The throw was easy because the fake did the work."

## Common Confusion

Pump fake and play fake are different tools. A play fake simulates a handoff to freeze run defenders. A pump fake simulates a throw to manipulate a pass defender's eyes or body. One attacks run defenders; the other attacks pass defenders.
