Prototypical describes a prospect whose physical measurements—height, weight, arm length, hand size, speed—match what NFL teams have historically sought at that position. A prototypical quarterback stands 6'3" or taller with a long arm, a compact release, and enough athleticism to move in the pocket. A prototypical left tackle is 6'5" or taller with long arms and sufficient foot speed to anchor in pass protection.

The prototypical label carries significant weight in draft evaluation because teams use positional size thresholds as risk management. A player who fits the prototype has a documented physical profile that has succeeded at the position before—teams can evaluate with higher confidence that the body will hold up and function as required.

Non-prototypical players at key positions—undersized quarterbacks, short cornerbacks, compact offensive linemen—face a higher evaluation burden. They must demonstrate on tape that their skill set compensates for the physical deviation, and they are often projected lower on draft boards or into positions with less positional value.

## Example

"6'4\", 315 pounds, 34-inch arms—he's prototypical for the position. Checks every box on the measurement sheet. Now let's see if he plays that way against NFL competition."

## Common Confusion

Prototypical is a description of ideal measurables, not guaranteed success. Many non-prototypical players outperform prototypical prospects because football skill, football IQ, and competitive drive translate regardless of size. The term describes how a prospect compares to the physical profile teams historically target—not whether he will succeed.
