# Protection Packaging

## Short Definition

Combining slide and man protection calls to account for every potential rusher—the pre-snap communication that determines how each blocker finds his assignment.

## Definition

Protection packaging is the pre-snap system that combines slide protection and man protection assignments to ensure every potential pass rusher is accounted for before the snap. The offense cannot simply block whoever rushes—they must identify in advance which defenders might rush and assign a blocker to each one before the ball is snapped.

A slide protection moves the line together in one direction—left or right—with each lineman taking the next defender in the slide direction. Man protection assigns each blocker a specific defender regardless of movement. Packaging combines them: the line might slide right while the running back and tight end take man assignments on potential rushers the slide leaves unaccounted for.

The center's MIKE identification is the starting point—it establishes the protection's anchor from which slide assignments radiate outward. A defense that stems or shows multiple blitz looks before the snap is deliberately attacking the packaging: if the offense can't correctly identify the likely rushers before the snap, someone goes unblocked. Elite offensive lines recognize defensive disguise and adjust the package in the seconds between the huddle break and the snap.

## Example

"Line slides left, center calls 50. Right guard takes the 3-tech on a man assignment—he's outside the slide. Running back ID's the linebacker who could come free. Snap. Every rusher has a blocker because the package accounted for each one before the ball moved."

## Common Confusion

Protection packaging and the MIKE call are related but not the same. The MIKE call identifies the anchor linebacker. Protection packaging is the broader system—the combination of slide direction, man assignments, and back protection responsibilities that accounts for every possible rusher based on the defensive alignment. The MIKE call is one input into the package; the package is the full solution.
