A college or non-NFL player being evaluated for potential selection in the NFL Draft—anyone in the pre-draft evaluation pipeline.

## Definition

A prospect is any eligible player being evaluated for selection in the NFL Draft—college players who have declared, graduates, transfers finishing eligibility, or players from other leagues. The term places the player inside the evaluation pipeline: his film is being watched, his measurements are being recorded, and his future NFL value is being assessed.

Prospects are evaluated across multiple dimensions: physical traits (size, speed, athleticism), technical skills (technique, hand usage, route precision), mental processing (recognition, decision-making), and character (work ethic, coachability, football intelligence). No single dimension determines a prospect's grade—scouts synthesize all of them into a projection.

The prospect window is finite. A player is a prospect from the moment he enters the evaluation process until he is drafted or signs as an undrafted free agent. Everything a prospect does from his final college season through pro day affects how teams perceive his NFL value.

## Example

"He's a great college player but an unknown prospect—his competition level hasn't tested him against NFL-caliber opponents. Film grades well; the Combine will tell us more about what his traits translate to at the next level."

## Common Confusion

Prospect and player are used interchangeably but carry different contexts. Every current NFL player was once a prospect. The term prospect specifically describes someone in the pre-draft evaluation pipeline—their abilities are being assessed for future professional potential rather than current performance. Once drafted or signed, the label changes to player or rookie.
