# Prospect Grade

## Short Definition

A scout's formal evaluation of a prospect's NFL potential—typically expressed as a round projection or numerical score reflecting overall talent assessment.

## Definition

A prospect grade is a scout's formal assessment of a player's NFL potential, typically expressed as a round projection—first round, Day 2, Day 3—or a numerical score on a proprietary scale. The grade synthesizes film evaluation, physical testing, medical findings, character assessment, and scheme projection into a single judgment about where a player belongs in the draft and what he will become at the professional level.

Grades vary by organization. The NFL uses its own internal grading scale that all 32 teams nominally reference. Individual teams use proprietary scales calibrated to their own historical outcomes. Media outlets publish grades as part of their mock draft and big board content. The lack of a universal standard means a "first-round grade" from one scout may not match the same label from another.

Grades evolve through the evaluation cycle. A prospect who enters the fall as a Day 2 projection may exit the process as a first-round grade if his Senior Bowl or Combine performance confirms what scouts hoped to see. The grade is the output of the evaluation; draft stock is how the market has priced that output.

## Example

"Three scouts, three different organizations, three different grades on the same player: late first, early second, mid-second. All three watched the same film. The difference is how each organization calibrates what a first-round player looks like at that position."

## Common Confusion

A prospect grade and draft stock are related but distinct. Draft stock is dynamic—a market perception that moves based on new information. A prospect grade is a scout's formal evaluation at a point in time, expressed as a round projection or numerical score. Stock reflects the market; grade reflects the evaluation.
