# Prorated Bonus

## Short Definition

The annual cap charge from a signing bonus divided equally across contract years—the mechanism that spreads large upfront payments across the salary cap.

## Definition

When a team pays a player a signing bonus, the NFL requires that amount to be spread equally across the contract years—up to a maximum of five—for salary cap purposes. This annual portion is the prorated bonus charge. A $30M signing bonus on a five-year deal costs $6M per year against the cap, not $30M in year one. This is what allows teams to sign large bonuses while managing year-to-year cap space.

Proration is the mechanism that makes modern NFL contracts function. Without it, a $40M signing bonus would eat an enormous portion of the cap in the year it is paid, making it nearly impossible to build a complete roster around any highly paid player. Spreading the charge across years lets teams front-load cash while back-loading cap responsibility.

The proration clock is tied to contract years, not calendar years. Void years extend the proration window, allowing teams to spread the bonus across more years and reduce each year's cap charge further. When contract years are voided—as they are designed to be—all remaining prorated amounts accelerate and count against the cap simultaneously, creating the dead cap charge.

Teams that restructure contracts convert base salary into additional signing bonus, generating more prorated charges that spread into future years. This is the core of cap manipulation—creating immediate space by extending future obligations. Cap analysts track cumulative prorated charges per player as indicators of how much dead cap a team would absorb if it needed to move on from that player.

## Example

"$25M signing bonus on a five-year deal—that's $5M prorated against the cap each year. The player has the cash today. The cap feels it slowly. Cut him in year three and $10M accelerates immediately."

## Common Confusion

A prorated bonus charge is not the same as the player receiving money annually—the player receives the signing bonus as a lump sum upfront. The proration is purely a cap accounting mechanism. The team pays the player the full bonus immediately; the cap feels it spread across years. If the player is cut, all remaining prorated amounts accelerate into the current year as dead cap.
