## Definition

A priority UDFA is an undrafted free agent that multiple teams aggressively pursue and sign in the minutes and hours immediately following the conclusion of Round 7. When the draft ends, the period for signing undrafted players opens simultaneously for all 32 teams, creating a brief window of intense competition for the top remaining prospects.

Priority UDFAs are typically players who had legitimate draft grades—often Day 2 or late Day 2 value—but went unclaimed due to positional supply, medical concerns, or the unpredictability of late-round picks. Teams that missed on the same position in the draft often target these players specifically. A priority UDFA who signs for a significant guaranteed amount—sometimes $200,000 or more—signals how seriously teams valued the player.

The UDFA signing period is considered an informal extension of the draft by personnel departments. Teams maintain UDFA target lists throughout draft weekend and often have scouts reach out to agents during Day 3 to pre-position for the signing period before Round 7 even concludes.

"Four teams called his agent before Round 7 was even over—that's a priority UDFA. He had a second-round grade on half the boards in the league. Somebody got a significant value signing today."

## Common Confusion

Priority UDFA and standard UDFA describe the same legal status—undrafted free agents—but the priority label identifies players who generated multiple competing offers the moment Round 7 ended. A player who signs with one team because no one else called is not a priority UDFA. One who chose between four teams immediately after the draft is.
