# Prevent Defense

## Short Definition

Late-game coverage with extra deep defenders to eliminate the touchdown play—accepting short completions that consume clock while protecting the end zone.

## Definition

Prevent defense is a late-game coverage designed to protect a lead by eliminating the play that scores a touchdown while accepting short completions that consume time. The defense drops extra defenders deep—typically five or six in the secondary—and allows short routes to complete while ensuring no receiver gets behind the coverage.

The trade-off is intentional: prevent surrenders completions to protect the end zone. A team leading by seven with 40 seconds left doesn't need to stop every play—it needs to stop the play that scores. Extra defensive backs over the top ensure no receiver runs behind the coverage for a touchdown.

The criticism comes from misapplication—using it too early when the opponent still has enough time and field position to complete a full methodical drive. Used correctly, prevent eliminates the catastrophic single play. Used too early, it surrenders enough completions for a full scoring drive.

## Example

"Leading by seven, 35 seconds left, opponent at their own 30—prevent. Two completions for 18 yards each, 36 yards total. Still needs 34 more yards with no timeouts. Clock runs out. Prevent accepted those completions and won the game."

## Common Confusion

Prevent defense is often blamed for late-game losses when strategically it is sound. The goal shifts from stopping every play to stopping the scoring play—accepting short completions that consume time. Teams lose on prevent when used too early, not when the concept itself fails.
