## Short Definition

A defensive back aligning at the line to jam the receiver at the snap—disrupting route timing and forcing the receiver to fight for his release.

## Definition

Press coverage positions the defender at the line of scrimmage, within one yard of the receiver, to jam at the snap. The goal is to disrupt the route's timing—if the receiver's route breaks at 10 yards on a 1.5-second throw, a clean jam that costs the receiver even a half-step destroys the timing window before the play develops.

Press technique varies by the coverage behind it. Press-man sends the defender with the receiver wherever the route goes after the jam. Press-bail shows press alignment then releases to zone—the press look disguises the defender's zone responsibility and the defender sinks to his zone at the snap.

The advantage of press is physicality at the line of scrimmage. The defender doesn't need to guess which direction the route goes—he needs to deny the receiver a clean release. By contesting the release point, the pressed corner eliminates the clean timing windows the offense designed. A receiver who fights the jam and gets off late can't run the route at its designed depth.

The risk is the deep ball. A pressed corner who gets beaten outside on a fade or go route is alone with no help and a clear path to the end zone. Press coverage invites the fade and the double move precisely because it reveals the defender's leverage before the ball snaps.

## Example

"Corner is in press—on the receiver's front foot before the snap. Receiver tries to release inside. Corner jams with his inside hand, disrupts the release, maintains hip position. The route breaks two yards late. The window the quarterback expected is gone."

## Common Confusion

Press coverage and man coverage are not the same thing. Press is a technique—where the defender aligns and when he makes contact. Man coverage is a structure—who he is responsible for. You can play press in man coverage or press in zone (press-bail). They describe different dimensions of the same play.
