# PRESS BAIL

## Short Definition

A pre-snap technique where a defender shows press alignment at the line, then releases to depth before the snap to play zone or bail coverage.

## Definition

Press bail is a pre-snap technique where the cornerback lines up in press alignment at the line of scrimmage but releases to depth before or at the snap, converting to a zone or deep coverage assignment rather than engaging the receiver at the line. The press alignment is a disguise—the corner shows the receiver and quarterback a press look, then bails to his actual zone coverage.

The disguise creates two problems for the offense. The receiver prepares for a press release at the line and instead gets a free release into a zone the corner is now playing from depth—the receiver's prepared footwork for fighting press contact becomes irrelevant. The quarterback's pre-snap coverage read sees press coverage and may anticipate man, but post-snap he's facing zone.

Press bail is common in Cover 3 and Cover 6 where corners have deep third or deep half responsibilities but the defense wants to disguise that before the snap. The corner's alignment near the receiver before the snap prevents early route recognition by the offense.

## Example

"Corner is in press alignment—receiver is ready to fight at the line. At the snap, the corner bails straight back to the deep third. The receiver releases clean into an empty space. But the corner is already there at depth. The press look was the disguise; the zone is the coverage."

## Common Confusion

Press bail is confused with bail coverage in general. Bail coverage means any corner who drops immediately to a deep zone rather than pressing. Press bail specifically means the defender starts in a press alignment, then releases to depth—the press look is the disguise, the bail is the actual assignment. A pure bail corner doesn't show press first. The deception is the defining characteristic of press bail.
