## Definition

PPR stands for Points Per Reception—a fantasy football scoring format that awards one additional point for every pass a player catches, on top of standard yardage and touchdown scoring. In a standard PPR league, a player who catches 6 passes for 70 yards and no touchdowns scores roughly 13 points (6 reception points + 7 yardage points). The same stat line in standard scoring would yield 7 points.

PPR fundamentally changes which players are valuable. Receivers who run many short routes and catch frequently—slot receivers, pass-catching running backs, tight ends in check-down roles—gain value relative to deep threats who catch fewer passes for more yards per reception. A player with 10 catches for 90 yards in PPR outscores a player with 4 catches for 100 yards, even though the second player gained more yards.

The format was designed to reward players for involvement rather than pure yardage efficiency, and to give value to offensive weapons the standard format underserves. In PPR leagues, target share and reception volume become as important as yards per catch when evaluating players for roster decisions.

PPR is now the most common format in competitive fantasy football, with half-PPR (0.5 points per reception) as a popular compromise between standard and full PPR. Understanding whether your league is PPR, half-PPR, or standard is the first and most important context for all player evaluation.

## Example

"In PPR, that running back with 9 catches is your best play this week—9 reception points before you count a single yard. Standard scoring leagues would never rank him this high."

## Common Confusion

PPR scoring rewards receptions, not just yards or touchdowns. A running back who catches 8 passes for 60 yards scores better in PPR than one who rushes for 80 yards with no catches—the reception points can matter more than the yardage difference. This elevates receivers and pass-catching backs relative to pure rushers compared to standard scoring.
